Take too much damage and you’re out of the race. In the new game you have to overtake other vehicles while avoiding any collisions. For anyone who knows their Konami history, Road Fighter (without the ‘s’) was Konami’s first driving game which was released way back in 1984 so this appears to be a remake/sequel to that game from 25 years ago. Thanks to an anonymous tip, we have received some details on a new title that Konami had out on location test in Japan last week called Road Fighters. Tags: Arcade Games, Konami, New games, racers, Road Fighters, stereoscopic 3D gaming There is also a mission mode where you pick a character, win medals and race against bosses, so it appears that Konami will be positioning this game for the hardcore racer market that is populated by games like Inital D and Maximum Tune. There are five modes including online play and a button to switch between 2D and 3D. UPDATE: Japanese game site Aries Small Room was at the location test and has a detailed report of what the game is like. When might arcade makers who release content outside of Japan be jumping on the 3D bandwagon is the next question. We have no idea as to when Konami will be releasing the game to arcades but with it on location test now I imagine that it will happen sometime this year, which will mean that we will have at least three stereoscopic 3D games to be on the look-out for, if you’re in Japan at least: this, Metal Gear Arcade and Disney’s 3D Ping Pong. Also if you look closely, you will notice on the back of the seat two holes which are another set of glasses so a person standing behind the game can see the 3D effect as well.
As you can see from the picture above, Konami is continuing to push their experimentation with stereoscopic 3D (after they did so with Metal Gear Arcade) but this time they took a cue from the old Continental Circuit 3D arcade racer and have mounted glasses to the cabinet as opposed to letting the player wear a headset. Remember Konami’s Road Fighters? Since we first heard about the game last September, there has been little to no information popping up about the game, until today where an anonomyous tipster sent us a photo of the new cabinet as seen on location test in Akihabara, Japan. Road Fighters will be released in Japan next month there is no indication at this point as to whether this will be getting an official international release and that seems quite unlikely given the game’s hefty price tag of around $35k per unit (that is per AM-Net, unsure if $35k is for a package of four units like we saw with SFIV or just one). To round it all off, the game lets the player pick from a diverse line-up of licensed cars, six of which are shown on the product page(click the link below). They also tap into Konami’s plentiful Bemani library for the background music, which might be a way to help pull in Bemani music fans who don’t mind playing racers either. The new page for the game mentions e-Amusement support for keeping track of player data as well as online competitive play. It has changed quite a bit since the first test, adding 3D support and a slick cabinet and soon we’ll see how the 3D additive helps the game compete against other technical racers such as Initial D and Maximum Tune.

It’s been almost a full year since we first revealed the development of a new Konami racer called Road Fighters and now Konami is finally ready to bring the game to market.
